America is an important academic center for philosophy of science. American philosophers of science as well as the activeness of the subject of philosophy of science have a profound influence on the whole world's subject of philosophy of science. The University of Pittsburgh is an important base of philosophy of science in America and enjoys very high reputation and prestige in the American academia. According to The Insider's Guide to the Colleges (Yale Daily News), the philosophy of science in the University of Pittsburgh is rated as top science in America. According to the latest ranking provided by Philosophical Gourmet Report, the University of Pittsburgh ranks the first in general philosophy of science. To a certain extent, the development of the philosophy of science in the University of Pittsburgh has been leading the development of the entire subject of philosophy of science.This paper carries out discussion from three aspects:to begin with, this paper starts with the history of Center for Philosophy of Science in the University of Pittsburgh in America and states the development history of the subject of philosophy of science in the University of Pittsburgh. At present, Center for Philosophy of Science in the University of Pittsburgh is the holy land of philosophy in the whole world as well as the typical representative of the philosophy of science in the University of Pittsburgh. This paper acquires a direct understanding of the development of the philosophy of science in the University of Pittsburgh by sorting out the history of Center for Philosophy of Science in the University of Pittsburgh. In the meantime, this paper also sorts out the status quo of the subject of philosophy in the University of Pittsburgh and points out the relations between Center for Philosophy of Science and other philosophical institutions (including the department of philosophy, the department of history of science and philosophy of science, and the graduate programs of classics, philosophy and ancient science), from which it can be seen that the development of the subject of philosophy of science in the University of Pittsburgh is complete.Secondly, this paper further concludes and sorts out the organizational structure and operation of Center for Philosophy of Science in the University of Pittsburgh specifically in order to thoroughly research the reason why this center has become the holy land of philosophy in the world. In terms of the organizational structure of this center, the institutional setting is quite distinctive. For example, the posts of the director, assistant director, and project assistant are held by3professors, and there are only two full-time administrative assistants. The secure capital sources for this center are also propping up its development, which is also what this center has been attaching great importance to for long. The operation of this center mainly relies on academic activities, academic societies, and academic resources, and they are also important platforms for the center to conduct academic exchanges.Thirdly, this paper summarizes the features of the subject of philosophy of science in the University of Pittsburgh according to the specific conditions set by the American human environments. This has then impacted and developed philosophy of science.The development of the consciousness and profundity of the awareness in the temporary society has enhanced the social status of philosophy of science. With respect to the importance of philosophy of science, a conclusion can be drawn that without philosophy of science flourishing more and more, there cannot be more complete and progressive cognition of the world or tools with which to transform the world.
