With the increasing demanding for the machining accuracy, speed, and the productivity, the static and dynamic characteristics of machine tools structure became an important indicator of overall structural performance evaluation. Meantime, how to deal with the static joint interface of machine tools plays an important role in obtaining its static and dynamic characteristics. Based on the 04 Important National Specific Projects and with the help of the SMTCL, structural dynamic design of a certain models of 5-axis gantry machining center has been carried out in this paper. This paper focuses on finite element modeling of machining tools and its key component, static and dynamic analysis, modal experiment and structural optimization, which greatly improved the processing efficiency and vibration resistance. And some rules were obtained in this paper by the experiment for static joint interface, which established an important theoretical and experimental basis for structural dynamic design and experimental methods of gantry machining center. The content of this paper is as follows:(1) Considering of boundary conditions and joint interface, the finite element model of the 5-axis gantry machining center and its key components was built and its static and dynamic characteristics were obtained through simulation by ANSYS. According to results of simulation, some conclusions were given in this section.(2) Modal analysis experiments of the 5-axis gantry machining center and its key components were carried out to acquire its dynamic characteristics by LMS Test.Lab, which verified the analyses by ANSYS. And the modification for the structure had been proposed when the weakness was found after.(3) The modification for the structural weakness was validated by ANSYS.(4) Based on structural dynamic design of the 5-axis gantry machining center, A set of experimental equipment for the static joint interface was designed. Meanwhile, experiments were carried out by using existing parameter identification methods for static joint interface, and some relevant conclusions were drawed in this paper,which could provide certain foundation to the structural dynamic design of gantry machining center and in-depth research.
