CDU is the first process in oil refinery system, and is the foundation of the oil's deep processing. The stability of its operation, the reliability of its controlling and the advancement of its management bring great influence on the quality and quantity of the oil products, utilization of the oil and the revenue of the corporation.The composition and evaluation methods of crude oil are described in this paper. Some key technologies of the steady state model of CDU, including crude oil TBP curve, characterization, properties calculation, process model, on-line parameters estimation, are developed. The steady state model of CDU is established. In comparison with simulation result of atmospheric-vacuum distillation units, this model demonstrates better performance in simulation accuracy and computation speed. It could predict the actual operation in crude oil distillation columns as well. Sensitivity analysis to the key factors, such as temperature of the atmospheric furnace, flow rate of bottom steam and side products, affecting on product quality or the stripping rate of crude oil was done on the steady state model of CDU. Based on the results of sensitivity analysis, quality parameters of atmospheric products and operating technics selected as restrictions, optimization of atmospheric tower was calculated by PSO. Results of optimization indicated that the stripping rate of crude oil was increased and the optimization objective was accomplished by adjusted operating variables.
