The lanthanide chloride catalyzed synthesis of pyridones and the applications of lanthanide complexes with D-mannitol derivative ligands and LLB type compounds in several reactions were studied in this thesis, which is composed with three parts as follows:1. An efficient method for the synthesis of arylidene heterobicyclic 3-cyano-2-pyridones via ytterbium chloride catalyzed tandem condensation of aromatic aldehydes, cyclic ketones, and cyanoacetamide was developed. The reaction is atom-economic and can be handled easily. The conditions and scope of the reaction were investigated and the mechanism for the process was proposed.2. Several imine ligands derived from D-mannitol with C2-symmetry were synthesized, which were tested in the lanthanide-catalyzed synthesis ofα-amino phosphonates. The influences of conditions and ligands on the stereoselectivity of the reaction were examined.3. (R)-LaLB heterobimetallic complex was found to be efficient catalyst for the reaction of o-aminocinnamate with isothiocyanide, which gave either 2-aminobenzothiazine or quinazoline-2(1H)-thione as a major product under different conditions. The influences of reaction conditions and ligands on the reactivity and stereoselectivity were examined.
