Polypropylene is highly flammable, accompanied by smoke, molten drop, which could easily cause a large fire.In this study, Zirconium clumps compounds were synthesized by Zr-801 and methylacrylic acid. The structure and performance of zirconium clumps compounds was confirmed by TEM, DSC, FTIR, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA). The results indicated that zirconium clumps compounds had a certain ordered structure and high thermal stability.The focus of this paper is to explore the influence on heat resistance and mechanical properties of PP after adding zirconium clumps compounds. Besides, PP was prepared by using MCA and red phosphorus as flame retardants and zirconium clumps compounds as synergistic agent. The effect of zirconium clumps compounds content on flame retardant and synergistic effect was characterized by LOI, TGA, TEM and FTIR. It was found that the zirconium clumps compounds could catalyze the esterification reaction of MCA and red phosphorus, and increase the thermal stability and char residue. Especially, when the addition amount of zirconium clumps compounds was 3.0%, the flame retardant performance of materials in MCA flame retardant system was improved the most, while the addition amount was 4.5%, the materials in red phosphorus system had the best results.
