Poly(arylene ether sulfone) is an important material of membrane in separation for its excellent physical and chemical properties. However shortcoming of the strong hydropho-bicity hinders its application in water treatment. This paper focused on the molecular design and introduced sulfonic group to modify the monomer, improving the hydrophilicity of the membrane. Poly(arylene ether sulfone) was synthesized in different ratio's sulfonation, and sulfonic group was successfully introduced to the polymer according to the characterizations by 1H-NMR and FT-IR. We prepared sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) ultrafiltration membrane using the L-S phase transformation and studied how the ratio of sulfonation influenced water flux, retention rate, moisture content, resisting protein pollution performance of the membrane. Results showed that the modified membranes performed better relative to the unmodified ones and ultrafiltration membrane with sulfonation on ratio 3% offered best properties. Moreover, the influence of film-forming conditions in L-S phase transformation on the structure of the membranes was studied by observing their structures through scanning electron microscope, obtaining a proper film-forming condition. Membrane casting solution used N,N-dimethylacetamide as the solvent, contenting 18% polymer, polyvinyl pyrrolidone as the additive with content of 5%~15%, worked at 70℃with residence for 10 s~20 s, then coagulated in bath of 20℃to 40℃...
