Polymer-based flame retardant composites are used in various fields, especially in three areas:the construction, electronics, electrical andtransport equipment. The experiment was divided into two parts, the firstpart is the intumescent flame retardant polypropylene flame retardant, andthe second part is the impact of the two halogenated flame retardant onflame retardany of engineering plastics PET.The first part studied the intumescent flame retardant systemmelamine phosphate (MPP) and pentaerythritol (PER) to flame retardantproperties of PP. The vertical burning test, the cone calorimeter test, universal tensile machine and scanning electron microscopy evaluated theflame retardant properties, mechanical properties, dispersion of flameretardant in the matrix and residual carbon morphology analysis ofPP/MPP/PER composites. The results showed that when the mass ratio ofMPP and PER is3:2, the best flame retardancy of the composites can begot. And when the total content of flame retardants is25wt%,it canachieve UL94V-0. Mechanical properties test showed that the tensilestrength first increased and then presented a downward trend. Residuecarbon analysis showed that the carbon layer increased pronouncedly withincrease of the flame retardant. Subsequently, based on above conclusion,we introduced organoclay modified by octadecylamine, and the verticalburning and cone calorimeter test results showed that the organic clay havea negative impact on flame retardancy of the composites which can be reflected from the X-ray diffraction and flame retardancy test. The second part is about the two brominated flame retardantsbrominated polystyrene (BPS) and decabromodiphenyl oxide (DBDPE)and antimony trioxide (Sb2O3) as synergistic agent to flame retardantproperties of engineering plastics PET. Synergistic effect of halogen flameretardant and Sb2O3is based on proper proportion, and afer finding theproper proportion, changes of the total content of flame retardants werestudied. The results showed that DBDPE and Sb2O3can not combined assynergistic system to flame retarded PET, for high processing temperatureas well as shear stress caused flame retardants to degradation. The bestratio of BPS and Sb2O3is2.4:1, and the content of10wt%can reach UL94V-0level.
