Objective:To study the clinical characteristic, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of gastrointestinal carcinoid, to improve the diagnostic rate and cure rate of gastrointestinal carcinoids.Material and Methods:The clinical datas of the 30 patients with gastrointestinal carcinoids treated at Qilu Hospital of Shandong University from January 2005 to December 2010 were reviewed.30 patients on medial age of 58.5 years(ranged from 22-80 years),24 patients were male, the others were female, male to female ratio was 4:1 in this series. There were 11 stomach carcinoids,1 small intestinal carcinoid,1 appendix carcinoid,2 colon carcinoids and 15 rectal carcinoids. The clinical characteristics were common. The preoperative misdiagnosis rate was high. All of the stomach, samll intestinal, appendix, colon carcinoids and 10 of the rectum carcinoids were treated by radical surgery.2 of the rectum carcinoids were treated by local excision per anum and 3 cases were treated by local extensive excision. Results:All the patients were followed up. The medial time was 14.5 months(ranged from 5-53 months). There was a significant difference in the 1-year,3-year accumulate live rate between those whose tumors lesions were<2cm,nonmuscular layer invasive, nonlymph node metastasis and those whose tumors lesions were >2cm,muscular layer invasive or lymph node metastasis. Conclusions:Gastrointestinal carcinoids were rare tumors with low malignant potential whose clinical characteristics were common. The symptoms in the later stage looked like malignant tumors. The preoperative misdiagnosis rate was high.Surgical resection was choosen firstly. The prognosis was mainly decided by the discovery, diagnosis and treatment as early as possible,at same time the key point of prognosis were the site, invasive, metastasis, position in digestive tract of the tumor.
