As a reflection and application of soft power, cultural diplomacy is becoming the main pillar of a country's diplomacy. Meanwhile, theoretical research and case studies about it are also gathering momentum. Since WWâ…¡, Japan's cultural diplomacy has learned from the Western world led by the United States, while keeping its own style and peculiar Japanese characteristics. Equipped with rich content, diversified agents and perfect mechanism, Japan's cultural diplomacy embodies both culture and diplomacy, its blood and bone. Along with the growth of its national strength, Japan actively conducted cultural diplomacy, with China as one of its main targets. In terms of its cultural diplomacy in China, Japan has yielded remarkable success through its painstaking efforts, while it is also confronted with constraints brought about by the structural contradictions between the two countries. This thesis is an attempt to analyze the advantages and limitations of Japan's cultural diplomacy through case studies of an organization and programme. China is suggested to draw on Japan's experience in cultural diplomacy and meanwhile take its own conditions into consideration. In this way, China is able to develop a cultural diplomatic mechanism with Chinese characteristics and make cultural diplomacy a major force in shaping its national image and promoting its peaceful development.
