Vocabulary in language is a dynamic and open system. It is the activest factor in language. As a tool which can help people to express ideas and exchange information, language always changes with social life. And the most obvious and directest representation of language is in vocabulary. In a word, naturally, neologisms have been an important object of study in linguistics.This thesis focuses on the English neologisms, studying their origins and semantic characteristics and analyzing many factors influencing their emergence in the context of social background with which they closely relate.This thesis focuses on the semantic characteristics, semantic change of the neologisms as well as their relations to semantic field and social context, based on the theories of semantics and context, instead of limiting the research to static description of the origins of English neologisms.
