Using true and false lexical decision priming task, the time course of graphic, phonological, semantic activation was investigated in the recognition of Chinese high frequency pictophonetic characters. The results show that:(1)high frequency of pictophmetic characters in a short SOA conditions (43ms,57ms), graphic priming effect has stably appeared, phonological and semantic information is not activated;(2)high frequency of pictophmetic characters in long SOA conditions (85ms,145ms), graphic priming effect is extremely remarkable, semantic priming and phonological priming effect is also significant, appearing almost at the same time. The results suggest:in the high-frequency pictophmetic characters identification process, graphic promoting effect is the most significant, and phonological and semantic activation appear in the longer SOA and it is difficult to distinguish their time course. This evidence is not consistent with those researches in which stimulate materials are not divided into pictophmetic characters and non-pictophmetic characters. These studies found that the order of accessing lexieal information of high-frequency Chinese characters is graphic, semantic and then phonological. This indicats that the phonological activation of phonetic radicals may compete with semantic activation of whole characters for processing resources. Our ruslts support dual-route model.
