Research On The Translation Theory And Practice Of Guo Moruo

Guo Moruo is an outstanding writer, historian, social activist and translator in modern China. His translation activities began in the second decade of the 20th century, and have been kept through his lifetime. He not only has left a great number of translation works, but also has made a great success in translation theory. Although the study of Guo's translation theory and practice has not caused widespread concern in the translation field, the guiding role played by his theory of "Creative Translation" and "Translation of the Charm" should not be underestimated. The study of Guo's translation theory and practice has a practical significance.This paper discusses systematically Guo's life experiences, the objective and subjective factors of Guo's translation activities and his translation theory and practice by the method of induction, summarizing and analyzing. This paper pays a particular attention to the translation of Shelley's Ode to the West by Guo Moruo, and makes a comparative analysis between the translation works between Guo Moruo and other translators.Through the discussion and analysis, this paper concludes that:the theory of "Creative Translation" and "Translation of the Charm" explored by Guo Moruo through his practice has played an active guiding role in poetry translation. Although Guo's translation work could not be known as the best and there is still room for improvement, Guo Moruo indeed has made a very commendable achievement in translation when considering the historical conditions and background of his time. As an early Chinese translator and writer who advocated and practiced to translate foreign literature works into China, Guo's translation activities have had a profound impact on the translation field of the time and after.
