| Talks on Musical Temperament (Lii Hua) by Qing dynasty author Dai Changgeng is composed of three volumes. Conbining the practice of guqin zither and di flute playing, Dai Changgeng puts forward the important idea of "one who argue temperament must understand musical instruments", and by investigating mathematical patterns of temperaments, Song dynasty musical scores, and the practice of guqin zither and di flute playing as they appeared in different written sources, Dai Changgeng endeavours to analyse and account for historical problems present in "Treatise on Musical Temperament."Mainly concentrating on bamboo flute playing, the second volume of Talks on Musical Temperament covers many important problems in music and temperament fields, such as yun, gong, diao, flute-temperament and score analysis, etc., and achieves great academic value far beyond its original intention of proving the correctness of "Treatise on Musical Temperament."While following mainly the line of Dai Changgeng's research, this dissertation cards and summarizes the problems of Twenty-Eight Modes, Zhong guan, Yin zi Fluteand so on in small topics, and collates Scores of Twelve Poets,Scores of Baishi Songs which are embodied in Talks on Musical Temperament by Dai Changgeng, then analyses and reviews Dai Changgeng's methodology and the peculiarities of his research on musical temperament.This dissertation has three parts:the introduction, the body and the conclusion. Based on punctuating the text and conducting a philological scrutiny on the more than 30 thousands written characters of the second volume of Talks on Musical Temperament, in the notes of every section, the body of this dissertation cards and collates the musical and temperament problems discussed in the section. According to the hard work in the previous part, in the conclusion, this dissertation discusses the methods and peculiarities of Dai Changgeng's research on musical temperament. |
