Women issue has always been a thought-provoking social issue. During the last two decades, feminism has been one of the key words in the western theses. All the feminism theories have a common principle, that"woman is an oppressed and discriminated class in the whole worldwide."In the patriarchal society women are just the"second sex"called by Simone de Beauvoir.Sarah Waters, an English lesbian writer, whose novels gained her numerous prizes and reputation, is believed to be one of the best novelists nowadays. Her stories are famous for giving a very full and accurate description of the London society and presenting a course of pursuing true love and self-recognition of the British women during the post Victorian Age in a graceful and hazy atmosphere.The thesis briefly introduces Sarah Waters and her works, presents literature review, the main plots of Fingersmith, the study aim and paper structure in chapter one. Then, in chapter two there is the related theoretical basis, four branches of feminism literature critical theories are mentioned. In chapters three and four, it focuses on the text and related theories to analyze the experience of the key figure in Fingersmith to display the process that how she was awoken by the sisterhood (lesbian love) of another woman and realizes her independence from a repressed life. In chapter five, it comes to a conclusion that patriarchy must be ended while women could be on to the next step of life through their own endeavor in the male-dominated fields where they have been oppressed before, and then they could be self-realization when they have mental support as well as economic independence.
