The English Test for Foreign Language Schools (TFLS) is organized by the Council of Institutes of Foreign Language Schools, and undertaken by Shanghai Foreign Language School Affiliated to Shanghai International Studies University (SFLS), the chairman of Institutes of Foreign Language Schools and the president of the Council. It is a criterion-referenced test conducted every year to check the teaching effects. The test is to check students'English abilities in listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating; to assess whether students have mastered the grammatical structures and vocabularies; to examine students'language communication skills; to test students'knowledge of foreign cultures. Meanwhile the test also aims to evaluate the teaching efficiency and to diagnose the existing problems of students so as to provide feedback, guidance and suggestion for the foreign language schools to further improve their English teaching.Taking the Level One English Test for Foreign Language Schools (TFLS1) in 2009 as an example and students of six classes from Shanghai No. 1 Experimental School Affiliated to Shanghai International Studies University as samples, validity and reliability analysis has been carried out. The validity and reliability analysis and evaluation results have shown that TFLS as a criterion-referenced test can reflect objectively the language proficiency of students, but it is not flawless. In order to provide better feedback, the thesis also designed two evaluation feedback reports: one is for a class random sampled with data, charts and feedback evaluations; the other is for an individual student explicitly pointing out his strengths and weaknesses.
