All of three children's books written by E.B. White:Stuart Little, Charlotte's Web, The Trumpet of the Swan are fantasy which have animals as hero. Animals in White's works keep purely animal nature, which smell of barn, field, pond and earth. Animals in the works act according with their animal nature. White describes animals and nature with realistic skill, and the mimetic of nature follows certain strict principle. Breeding, maturation and migration of animals go by the nature law. White's three works celebrate the process of life:birth, maturation, death. White starts from birth, and think of the opposite side of birth-death. In the three works of White, the heroes' routs share some similarity, there all linger in human's world in certain period, and their final home are nature world.Animals in the three works are also metaphor of human and human relationship. Little size Stuart is the metaphor of lonely adolescent living in adult world. Wilbur the pig is child being raised, his maturation penetrate the whole novel. Wilbur the pig and Charlotte the spider are child and the fosterer. Charlotte foster Wilbur with language, she is perfect fosterer. Charlotte is adult, who is mature and self-sufficient. Charlotte's Web is rich in its symbolic meanings, it represents control over life and maternity. The experience of Louis the swan who born with disability can be seem as the metaphor of young people conquer flaws, pursuit love and achieve success. In the relationship of animal and human, children usually have a trend to protect animals and love animals. Adult man usually kill animals, being fooled by animals, exploit animals, hunt for novelty on animals. We can find Romanticism, Modernism and Ecologism in White's books through the animals he create. White's three works belong to Modernism, for one thing, all of the three works have the theme of maturation, heroes all experienced maturation, which is the core theme of Modernism novel. At the same time, animals process certain modernity, they are different from animal heroes in traditional children's stories, for another, White's worry of human civilization is the main feature of Modernism novel. White's early love of nature and impact from Thoreau are two major origins of White's Romanticism. White also has Ecologism ideology, and he is a writer who has surpassed anthropocentrism. Moreover, fantasy and reality melt perfectly in White's works, which make white's work masterpiece of fantasy.
