A Case Study Of Chinese Versions Of Pride And Prejudice From Feminist Translation Perspective

Feminist translation theory has drawn all sorts of criticism and questioning voices from non-feminist translators because of its too much "manipulation" and "intervention" toward language in translation. Male translators or non-feminist translators always put their translation under patriarchy society, which usually reflects men's sovereign power. It is undoubtly another action of violating "fidelity" in translation. Single perspective will not only influence the fidelity of translation, but also affects the readers'understanding and appreciation of the original works. Borrowing the " androgyny " put forward by feminists in literary field, this thesis suggests that both male and female translators should gradually develop the translation ideas of "androgyny" while insisting on gender difference, which can encompass gender differences. And then this article attempts to make a comparative analysis between the two Chinese versions of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. On one hand, it aims to reveal different characteristics of translation strategies and practice adopted by translators of different genders; On the other hand, the author suggests "androgyny" translation mode be taken when doing translation. This view requires that the translator should not only translate from his/her own gender perspective, but should keep the other gender perspective in picture when doing translation, namely should hold an androgynous perspective. This idea provides a new vision for translation studies, and enables us to reconsider gender problems in translation.
