This paper starts with the profound connotations of humanism orientations manifested by portrait bricks and stones; makes a lateral comparison of the similarities and differences on humanism orientation between Chinese and Western arts and does a longitudinal research of finding out why portrait bricks and stones are so prosperous in Han Dynasties. Using the method of image analysis, this paper develops a thorough understanding of three major themes (productive labor; musicians, dancers and acrobats; folktale and myth) in portrait bricks and stones in order to fully analyze the many-faceted manifestations of humanism orientation in Han Dynasties through the aspects of worldly things, human feelings and emotions, and characters and personalities. From the disciplinary viewpoint of History and Arts, this paper uses frontier theories (Art and Culture Studies, Anthropology of Art, Aesthetic Sociology) in art circles to analyze the humanism orientation and iconography significance expressed through portrait bricks and stones in Han Dynasties.
