| The late 19th and early 20th century, the process of industrialization and urbanization had continued forward. The rapid development of industrialization, soon led to the generation of American industrial civilization syndrome; rapid progress of urbanization, soon brought about a series of serious social problems. Such as: increasing the urban poor, urban sanitation, environmental degradation, urban moral decay, municipal corruption, and many other serious problems. How to solve the social problems of industrial civilization, which is a major social issue for American with lofty ideals.Jane Adams is known for community reformist, feminist and pacifist in the United States. She spearheaded and led the social settlement house movement in the united states. She had her own insights on the purpose, on the way and the value of community improving. She believed that the settlement house movement is to help poor out of poverty and improve people's quality of life, enhance the cultural level of the residents and the maintenance of social harmony and stability. She considered that they should settlement in slums with the house as the center for implementing community settlement, and rely on legislation to promote community settlement.the American settlement house movement, both in helping European immigrants, helping the "New Women" in the United States to achieve self-worth, and promoting overall social progress or the revival of early Christian teachings, has an important significance.Researching on the Community Settlement practice of Jane Adams, we found that it has a clear clue. First, she had settled in the slums, living in the middle of the slum dwellers in direct aid to help them maintain a basic living conditions; Second, she hoped to improve the living conditions of slum dwellers and promote community health improvement to maintain the health of urban residents; Finally, she implemented social surveys and researching, collecting a lot information and statistical data about the living conditions of slum dwellers, providing the basis for the state and national reform legislation, writing books and be widely publicized, concerning the different vulnerable groups in society, promoting government legislation security work.On the impact of the settlement thought and practice of Jane Adams, this paper focuses on the role of the community settlement activities of Jane Adams in the American settlement house movement. On one hand, Jane Adams with her own community settlement practice affected American intellectuals of female youth to devote to the business of community reforming. On the other hand, she wrote books, with her own ideas to infect contemporary female youth intellectuals. Therefore, the American settlement house movement has close ties with the ideas and practice of Adams from start to decline. |
