Analysis Of Translation Of Li Qingzhao's Ci-Poetry From George Steiner's Hermeneutic Translation Theory

An important section of Chinese literary studies is the analysis of Li Qingzhao's Ci poetry. Li Qingzhao is an outstanding poetess in the literary history, who is called "the best poetess in Chinese Ci history". Thus many people studied the translation of the Ci poems of Li Qingzhao for a long time. On the basis of George Steiner's hermeneutic translation theory, the process of translation is a process in which translators understand and interpret the original text.On the basis of Steiner's fourfold hermeneutic translation steps and the translation of Li Qingzhao's Ci-poetry by Xu Yuanchong, at the same time, this thesis analyzes the stylistic features and the theme of Li Qingzhao's Ci-poetry and tries to study the application of the fourfold hermeneutic steps—rust, aggression, incorporation and compensation and the analysis of prejudice and fusion of horizons in the translation process. Therefore it can prove the positive function of hermeneutic translation theory in the translation of Li Qingzhao's Ci poetry.In this thesis, there are four chapters. The first chapter mainly introduces hermeneutic history related with translation, hermeneutic translation and George Steiner's fourfold hermeneutic translation steps. The second chapter briefly introduces Li Qingzhao and analyzes her Ci-poetry, which includes the life and historical condition of her, the features and the theme of her Ci-poetry, different translation versions of her Ci-poetry. The third chapter is a most important chapter in this thesis, which uses lots of examples to illustrate how fourfold hermeneutic translation steps to apply to the translation of Li Qingzhao Ci-poetry. The fourth chapter also is a most important chapter in this thesis, which uses examples to illustrate and analyze how "understanding as translation", "prejudice" and "fusion of horizons" to apply in the translation process, then which proves the instructive function of hermeneutic translation theory to the translation of Li Qingzhao Ci-poetry.George Steiner's thinks that "prejudice" and "fusion of horizons" are related to fourfold hermeneutic translation. During the course of trust, translators use their prejudices to make decision and choice of the texts. The "fusion of horizons" affects three stages—aggression, incorporation and compensation. During the course, the translator's horizon merges with that of the original texts and forms a new horizon, and after that a translated version is produced. The "prejudice" and "fusion of horizons" of this thesis could enrich Steiner's fourfold hermeneutic translation steps. During the translation course translators could unite the principles of "prejudice" and "fusion of horizons" with the fourfold hermeneutic translation, which instructs the translation of Li Qingzhao's Ci poetry.
