| Down all ages, there have been close relations between South Korea and China. The two countries are interwoven and closely bound up in such aspects as geography, economy and culture. When it comes to paintings, there is no doubt that Chinese paintings have a great influence on South-Korean paintings.North-Korean Stage as one of the most important stages in South-Korean painting history was to the full extent influenced by Chinese paintings. In a manner of speaking, Chinese art is the cornerstone of South-Korean art. Most importantly, School of Wu Painting which was introduced to South Korea in the 17th century as the representative of Literati Style turned out to be the cornerstone of South-Korean literati paintings and landscape paintings that later became quite fashionable and popular in South Korea in the 18th century. It is hard to affirm whether South Pope Style was introduced to South Korea in the North-Korean Stage when we study the history of South-Korean art, but those learners who study South Pope Style think that South Pope Style played an important role in the development of South-Korean paintings in the earlier and later period of North-Korean Stage. During this period, paintings by and painting styles of painters such as Mi Pei, Huang Gongwang, Ni Zan, Shen Zhou, Wen Huiming and Dong Qichang gained great popularity and were copied by South-Korean painters. As time goes by, paintings by and painting style of Dong Qichang was becoming increasingly popular, and at the same time, painters in Chinese Qing Dynasty also became the focus of the public. It is known to all that Dong Qichang as the creator of the Theory of South and North Sects led to the progress of Literati Painting by laying stress on the advantages of Literati Painting, establishing a system of Chinese painting history and creating many works. As one of the most influential painter and calligrapher, Dong Qichang spread his fame to South Korea when he was live. In the 18th century, one could find Dong Qichang's painting style in South-Korean paintings. The Theory of South and North Sects proposed by Dong Qichang was pursued on a large scale by the people in South Korea. During the later period of North-Korean Stage, painters and literati and officialdoms were keen on painting South Pope Painting. Zheng Shang, Jiang Shihuang and Li Linxiang are the typical painters of South Pope Painting. Zheng Shan was famous for the landscape painting he created. What can not be ignored is that he well received South Pope landscape painting and that he applied it to his own unique paintings, which had made great contributions to popularizing South Pope paintings. Dong Qichang's paingting style could be found in Zheng Shan's paintings, which indicated that Dong Qichang had had a great impact on him. Able to create poems, books and paintings, Jiang Shihuang focused on such painting domains as landscape, flowers and figures. He all alone committed himself to South Pope literati painting spirits that are practical and free from vulgarity. He was renewed as Chief Leader in art circles because he created a sophisticated world of South-Korean literati painting, which had a huge influence on art circles in the later period of North-Korean Stage. Based on his excellent insight, he enabled himself to practice while understanding the theory. He took active part in creating works of paintings and appraised paintings by other painters. In this way, he was involved in some painting tides, such as South Pope painting, landscape painting, genre painting and western painting, thus he became an indispensible person in painting of North-Korean Stage. Dong Qichang's painting style could also be found in Jiang Shihuang's works, that is to say, Jiang Shihuang's painting style was influenced by Dong Qichang's. The fact that Dong Qichang's paingting style could be found in both Zheng Shan's works and Jiang Shihuang's works shows that Dong Qichang's painting style penetrated into every corner of the painting of the later period of North-Korean Stage. The Theory of South and North Sects played an important part in painting in the later period of the changeable and thriving North-Korean Stage. This is the greatest contribution made by Dong Qichang to the development of South-Korean painting while Zheng Shan and Jiang Shihuang devoted themselves to creating new Sorth-Korean traditional painting by expressing South and North Pope painting in their own way. Up to now, they still influence South-Korean modern painting. |
