Autobiographical memory represents the records people have saved in mind fortheir own life, which could bring important influences on people's lives. However, some individuals might meet difficulties in retrieving specific information ofautobiographical memory and trend to recall overgeneral events, which is namedovergeneral autobiographical memory in psychological pathology and common inperformances of depressed groups.. In general, researchers have analyzed and hypothesized many mechanisms ofovergerneral autobiographical memory from three points, which are affect and emotion, cognitive resources and self-regulation. This article analyzed and compared existingrelated researches for comparison, finding the difficulty in inhibiting goal-unrelatedinformation is the key to overgerneral autobiographical memory, and rumination alsohas great effects on retrieving specific autobiographical memory. Past results haveshowed that both rumination and inhibition have strong association with depression. With the proofs of strong association between overgerneral autobiographical memoryand depression, we speculated that both rumination and inhibition are the factorscausing depression and overgerneral autobiographical memory. Understanding theprocesses of rumination and inhibition causing depression or overgerneralautobiographical memory could help uncover mechanisms underlying depression andovergerneral autobiographical memory on the basis of previous researches and provideproof for psychological intervention in the future. This article recruited non-depressed participants to explore two hypotheses withquestionnaires and experiments: one is that inhibition acts as a mediator whenrumination predicts depression, the other is that rumination acts as a moderator wheninhibition effects on overgerneral autobiographical memory, what's more, it representedquestions worth focusing in the future. Conclusions of this research are: 1.bothrumination and inhibition could predict future depressed states, and inhibition is part ofmechanism of rumination predicting depressed state, 2.abstact and evaluative thinkingmode could increase overgerneral autobiographical memory, 3. specific andprocess-focused thinking mode could decrease overgerneral autobiographical memory,4. after different types of thinking training, results of autobiographical memoryretrieving of individuals from different groups separated by ability for inhibition aredifferent, which means that training effect size on high inhibition group would be largerthan that on low inhibition group.
