Study. Of Tujia Brocade Productive Protection Status Quo

This thesis is about Tujia brocade Xilan Karp in Longshan in Hunan province, Enshi and Laifeng in Hubei province. It contains mainly the situation of protection via producing of the Tujia brocade, the contradictions and problems in the process of protection, as well as preliminary thinking and exploration about the solutions.This paper makes a comparison between and a summary about the situation of protection via producing of the Tujia brocade in the three fieldwork locations from the theoretical perspective of the folklore and by using theories of cultural anthropology and sociology. I tried my best to study on the protection status of the cultural heritage to show its change and non-change of the craftsmanship, which achieved the organic integration of social and economic benefits. The contradictions and challenges in the simultaneous development of cultural protection and production are also concerned in this paper. I pondered on the possibility and significance of Folklore in the protection of cultural heritage such as Tujia Brocade.The thesis consists of six parts, including the introduction and the conclusion. The first chapter introduces the social and cultural environment and the natural ecological environment of Tujia Brocade, as well as the three fieldwork locations.The second chapter studies on the protection and development status of the Tujia brocade, mainly from the situation of production, inheritors and succession of craftsmanship. Chapter three analyzes the changes and challenges of protecting the craftsmanship of Tujia brocade. Chapter four is the focus of this paper, mainly using the theory of the overall protection of the cultural space to strengthen the use of protection via producing to protect the core of craftsmanship, and highlight the roles different people play in the protection especially the role of the inheritors.Protection via producing is the only choice to realize live protection of the Tujia brocade. Supporting the inheritors is the core of protection, and to keep a balance between protection and development is the key to protect intangible cultural heritages.
