Since the field of preschool education has been advocating the mathematics teaching activities be "play-based", nowadays almost all these activities are named to be "play-based" in kindergarten's teaching practices. The questions are as follows: What about the children's "playfulness" performance in the "play-based" mathematics teaching activities? Are there any significant gender differences in the playfulness performance? Further, What about the children's performance during all the teaching links such as leading-in, explanation and demonstration, hands-on exercises and summative evaluation? Also are there any significant gender differences? This study is made based on the questions listed above.According to the revised Children's Playfulness Scale of Barnett, this study launched observations on the mathematics teaching activities of 8 middle class from 4 kindergartens in Nanjing City and collected 12 group teaching-activity cases and 412 childhood playfulness performances. The analysis of the 412 childhood playfulness performances using SPSS 17.0 draws the following results:1) The "manifest joy" of children is more moderate. Basically it's about "look focused, positive", which appears 262 times and accounts for 63.6%. The "stronger" playfulness performances such as "macromimia (making faces) etc", "singing and dancing with joy" appear 2 times and accounts for 0.5%.2) The frequency of "cognitive spontaneity" and "social spontaneity" is lower. The former appears 15 times which accounts 3.6%, while the latter appears 20 times accounting for 4.9%. 3)The gender differences among "manifest joy","cognitive spontaneity","sense of humor","digression" and playfulness performances are not significant while "social spontaneity" and "physical spontaneity" are significant.4)In the each link of teaching, there are significant differences among the five factors of the playfulness of children,"off-topic performance" and the overall performance of playfulness.Based on those research results, this study reviews the middle class group mathematics teaching activities (MCGMTA) and finds there existing advantages and disadvantages:The MCGMTA takes on the characteristics of high structure and tight control; the teachers play less attention to the individual differences in the children's mathematics learning; the interaction between teachers and children is unsatisfactory; in the group teaching activities, the teachers don't fully play their roles in explanation and demonstration, hands-on exercises, summative evaluation; the teachers play better roles in the link of leading-in. In the end, corresponding suggestions are put forth from the two aspects of teaching philosophy and teaching skills.
