Groundwater monitoring network plays an important part in hydrogeological work.Thehydrogeological information provided by it has a irreplaceable role in groundwater development, research and management. Owing to historical and technical limitations, the research of themonitoring nerwork developes slowly. It always has the problem that data is rich but containslittle information. Each method focuses on the problems from different perspectives, usingdifferent criterias, yet there still exist respective deficiencies in those methods. Until now, nomethod has been widely accepted and applicated. How to choose the suitable method to build aneconomic, reasonable and effective groundwater monitoring network becomes one of the mosturgent problems to be solved. The optimal design of regional groundwater monitoring networks which can be dividedinto groundwater level networks and groundwater quality monitoring networks according todifferent factors are the main content of the article. Two kinds of networks are accomplishedbased on different methods and softwares by using the data about groundwater level in May2010and data about groundwater quality in drought period2007respectively in Shenyang. The optimal design of groundwater level network is accomplished by using ordinarykriging method which is perfected and replenished based on Surfer software. The nest structureshows that it can reflect the spatial characteristic of groundwater level better than singletheoretical models. The standard deviation of estimated error can meet the threshold and theaverage kriging standard deviation reduces0.25after optimization. The optimized groundwaterlevel monitoring network removes54redundant observation wells and adds14new wells. The optimal design of groundwater quality network is accomplished by using principalcomponent analysis coupling with cluster analysis based on MATLAB software with aconsideration of hydrogeologic condition sufficiently. The optimization result is provedaccurately and reliably by the validation of each other. The optimized groundwater qualitymonitoring network removes1variable to be sampled and2redundant observation wells.
