Since human civilization steps into modern age, with the development and boost of industrialization and life quality, the need of fresh water increased dramatically. The "water crisis" has become a new challenge towards human society after the "energy crisis". The most convenient method to tackle the water shortage is "asking oceans for fresh water", thus the development and spread seawater desalination technology is indispensable. This thesis introduced a new type of small scale single effect seawater desalination system. This new system is very flexible, convenient to operate, easy to maintain and reliable. This desalination system use low temperature heat source such as waste heat of ship motive power system. This product orients at the place where fresh water is valuable and low temperature heat source is available such as ship and submarine, small islands or brackish lake far in continents. We use plate heat-exchanger as the core part of this system such as evaporator. Specific contents of this thesis are listed as follow:1. According to current research of seawater desalination technology and plate heat-exchanger, integrate the characteristics of ship desalination system, find a practical tech scenario for the small scale desalination system.2. Design the process of the desalination system, estimate major parts’craft parameters (containing pre-heater, evaporator and after-chiller);3. Assemble the desalination system and take a test run, raise rigorous steps to start and stop the system.The system efficiency was tested. These tests emphasized on variations of important parameters such as pure water production, water recovery, total heat transfer efficiency and boiling heat transfer efficiency with different feed-in flow rate and different heat water flow rate. 5. The patent heat exchange plate was examined with respect to its heat exchange efficiency, including both side phase change heat transfer and one side phase change heat transfer.The performance of evaporator which is composed of single plate under typical working situation was tested, including total heat transfer efficiency and boiling heat transfer efficiency.
