Heave plate is the key component of the Spar platform and becomes one of the hotspots of marine engineering as it can effectively improve the heave response of the system by increasing the added mass and providing additional hydrodynamic drag.In this paper, the hydrodynamic characteristics of single heave plate and multi-plates were experimentally studied using forced oscillation method. Forced tests on heave plates of different water depths, different thicknesses, different perforated ratios, different edge shapes and different spacing undergoing different amplitudes and frequencies of oscillation were conducted. During the tests, the vertical displacement of the system and the vertical force on the system were measured. Morison’s equation was adopted to analyze the motion of the system and the hydrodynamic coefficients of the heave plates include added mass coefficient and drag coefficient can be obtained by using the Least-square method. The effects of the oscillation amplitude, oscillation frequency, thickness, edge shape and perforated ratio on hydrodynamic characteristics of heave plate were studied and discussed. The hydrodynamic coefficients of heave plates with the same perforated ratio but different hole size were compared and it was found that the hole size has a little impact on hydrodynamics of heave plate. Experiments on three solid heave plates and three perforated heave plates were also carried out and the experimental results were compared with that for the single solid plate and single perforated plate, respectively. The relationship between the heave plate spacing and hydrodynamic coefficients was analyzed. Furthermore, in order to investigate the effect of heave plate on the hydrodynamics of Spar platform, tests on Spar models consist of singe cylinder and three heave plates were carried out. These results can be referred to in practical engineering design and numerical calculation.
