With the rapid development of the formation systems of micro satellites, precision ranging between satellites has become an important topic. Dual-transponder carrier ranging system can be used to measure high precision relative distances and can be simply achieved, and it has been simply validated on the existing analog platform by analog way. In order to measure the absolute distance in the future, and in order for the convenience of further research, the system should be achieved by digital way finally.In this paper, dual-transponder carrier ranging is validated on the existing digital platform at first, and there is a distance initial value changing problem. A detailed analysis of the above problems is carried out and corresponding solutions are put forward, then the factors that affect the ranging performance are analysed and the ways to improve them are introduced. According to the previously proposed solutions, new needs to the experimental platform are raised and new experimental platform for carrier ranging system by digital way is build in this paper, including the design of hardware platform and the improvement of the software platform. At last, the new experimental platform is tested in this paper. Functionality and performance of the hardware platform are verified, then the dual-digital-transponder carrier ranging system is fully tested based on the combination of hardware and software platform, including distance initial value test and precision test.In summary, dual-transponder carrier ranging system is realized stably by digital way in this paper, with elimination of the problems and enhancement of the ranging precision. The final results reach the sub-millimeter precision.
