Study of near-fault ground motion has become a hot focus in recent years. As a closelyrelated factor to the damage of medium-to-long period structure, and with a good relevanceto the earthquake intensity estimation, the PGV has been given more and more attention bythe earthquake engineers. In this paper, by some simple source and medium models, theeffects of source parameters on near-fault PGV distribution are studied with numericalsimulation method. The main researches in this paper are summed as follows:1. The general features of near-fault ground motions and the application of PGV inearthquake engineering are summarized.2. A secondary development is applied to COMPSYN, a commonly used ground motionsimulation software and the bell source time function is added into it. By the comparisonswith analytical solutions of full space, the validity of the revised code is confirmed. Thenusing the secondary developed program, effects of different source time functions onground motion simulation results are compared.3. Based on numerical simulation results, the effects of source parameters on near-faultPGV distribution are summarized, which includes fault dip, depth, rupture velocity, initialrupture position, earthquake magnitude and slip angle. Then based on the simulationresults the PGV distribution formulas of different moment magnitude are fitted.4. Using the COMPSYN software, near-fault PGV distribution of the1999Chi-Chi,Taiwan, Earthquake is simulated, comparison with the observed results shows that whenthe source model is quite determined, this software can be used to simulate near-fault PGVdistribution fields. At last, the research contents are summed up and the problems need to be furtherstudied are put forward.
