Since the Reform and Opening, the development of the industry cluster and regional resources sharing are effectively promoted by the sustained rapid growth of economy, urban integration and the accelerating advance of regionalization process. Urban economic activities are no longer confined to itself, but contact with the surrounding regions, which form a closely linked community. The increasing fierce competition in areas of commodity production, trade and service between cities especially the central cities leads to the increasingly tense competition for production factors such as capital, raw materials, land resources and labor. It is difficult to meet the requirements of urbanization to urban development just on their own resources for regional central cities. If the central cities are hoped to develop into a higher level, the urban space must be competed maximizing. Therefore, as the basis of the study on the spatial relationship between the city and its hinterland the reasonable, the measurement of city hinterland became an important subject in the field of economics and the current urban development.In this paper, the present situation and development trend on the urban hinterland research in domestic and foreign were combed by looking up electronic literature, basic geographic information database and professional literature paper and obtained national road traffic data and social economic development data in1991and2010. The principal component analysis for urban development indicators was completed by using SPSS19.0and the city comprehensive scales were sorted and graded. The urban accessibility was evaluated and analyzed by the spatial analysis function of ArcGIS. Then the spatial field intensity of cities in1991and2010were measured by the field model and the urban hinterlands were divided by using the maximization principle of the field strength and the spatial pattern of the results was analyzed. Finally, the urban agglomerations were divided according to the urban hinterlands and under the correlation analysis. Additionally, the hinterlands of Henan province were subdivided with the model of hydrological analysis.The study shows that it is simple and vivid to measure the urban hinterland area of prefecture-level cities or above in China by using the GIS tools. The introduction of field-strength model takes full account of the dual effects of the city comprehensive scale and road traffic conditions within the range of urban hinterlands, which is closer to reflect the actual urban development. For city hinterland division, the quantitative analysis of wide range of many urban hinterland area are realized according to the "maximal field-strength choosing" principle. For example, the prefecture-level or above the simulation analysis of secondary range of many urban hinterland area are realized with the help of hydrological analysis model, like the provincial, urban agglomeration, regional economic zone which contain the city’s hinterland divisions; It can be effective in breaking down administrative barriers between the cities and promoting the development of synergistic integration among cities or among the regional based on the method to definite the range of the city agglomeration by analyzing range of the urban hinterland area. The results can be provided as scientific basis for urban plan, urban agglomeration plan and regional development plan.
