Ionic polymer metal composites(IPMC) is a new type of smart material, it made fromperfluorinated sulfonic acid membrance which deposited precious metal platinum on both side bychemical plating method. When IPMC is in the electric field, it will produce certain displacementand blocking force. IPMC have potential applications such as sensors, medical engineering,biomimetic mateials, actuators. It have many merit including low energy consumption, lightweight, low voltage,but small displacement and low blocking force limit the application of IPMC.In this paper, three aspects have been done in order to improve the performance of IPMC.(1) Sulfonated graphene mono-molecular film was synthesized and doped intoperfluorosulfonicacid solution to prepare around200μm–thick hybrid membranes with varyingmass ratios. Those processes were monitored and demonstrated by attenuated total reflectanceFourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The detections of physical performances related toelectromechanical properties reveals that, flexibilities, ionic exchange capacities, and watercontents of hybrid membranes increase in a degree. To make ion exchange polymer-metalcomposites, two Pt nano sheets were sandwiched on both sides of the resultant membranes. SEMobservations reveals that, the Pt nano particles are relatively fine and uniform, the electrodesplanes are relatively flat, and the bonding between electrode and hybrid membrane is firm.Inputted the sinusoidal wave with a low frequency for fabricating electro-active actuator,detections of force and displacement sensors reveals that, the hybrid membrane has a highelectrostrictive strain, the maximum displacement is2.12times higher than that of the pureperfluorosulfonic acid membrane under same conditions.(2)SPS-PMHS was total synthesized from styrene by polymerization, sulfonation, acyation,amine reaction, hydrosilation reaction, the synthesis process was monitored by FTIR and Uv. TheSPS-PMHS was homogeneously dispersed in Nafion matrix with doping level of33.33wt%.Theresults show that the tip displacement have significally reduced under3.0V.(3)Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were covalently modified with imidazoliumsalt base ionic liquid in order to improve the performance of dispersion. It may be replaceplatinum as electrode of IPMC.
