Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) and graphene have large specific surface area, thermal conductivity, and good physical and chemical property. It has considerable interest because of their unique properties and potential applications in allround areas. Our objective is to improve the physical properties of the liquid crystalline polymer (thermal properties) by incorporating the MWNTs and graphene.Firstly, a rodlike thermotropic liquid crystalline polyester (TLCP) and its nanocomposites was synthesized from4,4’-oxydibenzoyl chloride and resorcinol containing different concentrations of modified MWNTs and grapheme (0.1wt.%,0.5wt.%and1.0wt.%) according to the method of high-temperature solution polycondensation and in-situ polymerization. Then, the characterization of two types of nanocomposites was proceeding. It was mainly includs IR, XRD, DSC, TGA, SEM, TEM, POM and optical analysis. The results demonstrated that two types of carbon materials did not change the property of liquid crystalline polyester. And it enhanced the thermal stability of nanocomposites. The mesophase temperature range of nanocomposites were widened and shifted to higher temperatures through the DSC and TGA. In other words, the addition of small amount of additives into TLCP matrix could significantly improve the thermal stability. Accordingly, the advantages in thermal performance of the MWNTs and graphene were confirmed.
