Hydroxyethyl methacrylate(HEMA),(2-dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA)and dimethyl methacryloyloxyethyl phosphate(DMMEP) were respectively grafted onto cottonmacroinitiator acylated by2-bromoisobutyryl bromide to obtain functional cotton fabric viaatom transfer radical polymerization(ATRP) in water aqueous using CuBr/PMDETA ascatalyst system. In this study, cotton macroinitiator was prepared by2-bromoisobutyryl bromide reactedwith cotton fabric using dimethyl aminopyridine(DMAP) as catalyst and triethyamine as acidbinding agent. The bromine content on cotton macroinitiator surface was measured by surfacespectroscopy. The optimum conditions of reaction time, reaction temperature and initiatorconcentration were determined by single factor experiments. The technological parameters of reaction of three functional monomer grafted oncotton fabric by ATRP method were respectively discussed and the structure and propertiesof grafted cotton fabric were characterized. The optimum conditions of monomerconcentration, catalyst concentration, reaction temperature, reaction time and pH valuewere determined by single factor experiments. The structure of grafted cotton fabric wascharacterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy,X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The results indicated thatmonomer was successfully grafted on cotton fabric by ATRP method. The flame resistanceproperty, antibacterial property, wrinkle resistance property and mechanical property ofcotton fabric before and after modification were tested. It was obtained that the graftedcotton fabric had particular functionality and the wearability of grafted cotton was notaffected.
