Wetland is the richest biodiversity and natural resources on the earth, wetland constitutes one of the most important landscapes for human beings. However, due to ever expanding ranges of cities and the corresponding needs of societal development, wetlands are suffering from problems of over-exploitation, pollution and damage. The resultant sharp decreases in natural wetland area, and deterioration in its ecological functions, post a threat to the natural environment and ecological system, and leads to serials of environmental and ecological crisis. Protection and recovery of the wetland resources are receiving more attentions nowadays, and since the self-restoration of wetlands is slow and to a limited extent, so, people started to try simulating natural wetland, and studied to construct a new artificial wetland landscape with the same ecological functions, and at the same time satisfying the aesthetic needs. However, most of the previous artificial wetland designs lack a good comprehension of the wetland sciences, ecology, economics and sociology, leaving many unsatisfactory wetland designs. This study gives a comprehensive research into the artificial wetland system, combining theories from landscape ecology, ecology, planning science, ecological security pattern and other relevant principles, and applying them into the practice of artificial wetland system. The ecological processes, structures, functions and the artistic compositions of artificial wetland are studied, and some reasonable protection-utilization policies and methods, together with an artistic methodological system of artificial wetland construction are put forward. This study also includes a case study of Mi River ecological planning in Shandong, Shouguang city. This research is aimed at providing some innovative urban artificial wetland construction methods, for the purpose of promoting a healthier and more sustainable eco-system in cities, safeguarding human health, and eventually guaranteeing a sustainable development of the society.
