Tool technology is one of the key technologies for machining, which creates a significant impact on machining efficiency and quality. The emergence of new workpiece materials and components with complex shape continues to challenge cutting tools. The solid carbide end mills have found increasingly wide applications in practical machining. However, their complex structures with multi-parameter limit the development efficiency greatly. In this thesis, structural parameters are analyzed according to the feature of solid end mill. Cutting edge and groove shape are derived using the theory of helix to establish an accurate model, which provides a theoretical basis for the design of solid end mill.A CAD system for solid end mill is developed on the UG NX software platform with Visual C++and UG/Open API technology. The system achieves modeling and drawing functions by applying callback function. As a result, designing process and development time are reduced.A3D milling simulation method is established and verified by experiment at the same time. Then a parameter design method is proposed based on the simulation method, which would guide the design of the solid end mill.At end of this thesis, taking the practical machining of Titanium alloy as a case study, a solid end mill is designed and manufactured. Feasibility of the design method is verified by parallel cutting experiments with the manufactured end mill and an imported competitor.
