Paper-making, as one of the" four great inventions", has played an indelible rolein the history of Chinese civilization. Xuan paper, the representative of traditionalhand-made paper, has an important position in the history of Chinese culture. With theenhancement of China’s consciousness towards protection of intangible culturalheritage, Xuan paper is becoming more and more valued in Chinese history and culture.However, in the trend of modern economic development, the paper’s survivalenvironment is changing. Of course, what is changing most is its traditional skills, aswell as its social status, in the local economy and culture.From the perspective of protection of intangible cultural heritage, the article willdiscuss the following aspects concerned with Xuan paper, based on lots of literal data,fieldwork and summary analysis. First, the doubt about its origin has been the centralargument in the world of Xuan paper research. The author of this dissertation willmake a conclusion that the origin of Xuan paper seems to be further investigated,through mass access to relevant information and some practical artists. Second, a lot ofpeople have done the research on Xuan paper process, but the author thinks the processneeds further exploration and investigation. So under the guidance of the supervisor,the author visits the sites of Xuan paper enterprises and discusses deeply its productionprocess with masters to hope the paper process will be showed to readers moreelaborately. Third, the status of paper craft inheritance is a problem that had beenignored by previous research experts. So with the accompany of the Xuan paperresearch director, Huang Feisong, the author will analyze the current status ofcraftsmanship from the microscopic aspect, which is most likely to be effective reference information for contemporaries and the future generations, through visitingthose survival practical artists and some paper factories that keeping pure manualproduction. Fourth, the economic and cultural contributions of Xuan paper enterprisesare the area that previous research scholars almost never set foot. The author gets first-hand information by visiting the Ministry of Commerce and Industry of Jing County,in Xuancheng City and some famous Xuan paper manufacturing enterprises, andanalyzes those original data, and then forms the corresponding points of view. The lastbut not the least, paper craft inheritance, as the object of protection of intangiblecultural heritage, is also facing many problems, such as the increasingly severeshortage of Xuan paper raw materials, the shortage of paper production practitioners,the challenges from mechanized production and the bad effect of existent protectivemeasures. Aimed at these problems, the author puts forward some ideas on Xuan paperprotection. First, feasible and reasonable norms of Xuan paper must to be established.Then, Xuan paper raw materials should be protected in a long-term perspective. Last,setting up a “special zone” to protect Xuan paper traditional craftsmanship and raisingthe protection awareness from the ideological concept are crucial to make purehand-made paper production techniques inherited.
