With the the progress of the society and the more attention on fire-fighting circumstance. Paper materials in flame retarding properties have higher request, and become more and more important. In this paper, it were studied that the synthesis of sodium aluminum silicate and flame retarding effect. Furthermore, the quality of fire-retardant paper, which was coated with sodium aluminum silicate-based flame retardant system, was evaluated. Some of the major environmentally friendly flame retardants, including magnesium hydroxide, bentonite, aluminum hydroxide, red phosphorus and sodium aluminum silicate were used. The flame retardant mechanism of flame retardants were analyzed by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Scanning Electron Microscopy. So the results were as follows:(1) It was conducted for choosing the synthetic process routes first: (NaOH:Al(OH)3:Na2SiO3=1:1.2:1, pH=7.Sodium aluminum silicate minimum size for760R.n m, viscosity for325cp. It was observed by SEM and X-ray analysis, sodium aluminum silicate is formulas for NaAl (SiO3)2crystal.Sodium aluminum silicate has crystallized structure and striking performance.(2) The flame retardant paper prepared by coating sodium aluminum silicate which could improve the whiteness and flame retardant. While the particle size of sodium aluminum silicate was760R.nm, the whiteness of the coated paper was about increased by13%. After the ball grinding mill, the flame retardant paper prepared by coating sodium aluminum silicate which is702R.nm of granularities, when coating quantity is61g/m2, the length of charring only91mm.(3) When Mg(OH)2:NaAl(SiO3)2=1:2and Al(OH)3:NaAl(SiO3)2=1:1,the fire-retardant paper has very good fire-retardant function, when coating quantity is63g/m2, the length of charring nearly90mm which is lower than the national standard.(4) When Mg(OH)2:NaAl(SiO3)2:red phosphorus=5:5:1, flame retarding effect decreased; When Mg(OH)2:NaAl(SiO3)2:bentonite=5:5:1, flame retarding effect increased.(5) The flame retardant mechanism of NaAl(SiO3)2were amalyzed by DSC and SEM, the initial temperature of NaAl(SiO3)2decomposition is140.5℃. During the fiber decomposition, NaAl(SiO3)2leads to a greatly decreasing in the activation energy of fiber decomposition, and the initial temperature of fiber decomposition decreases from373.5℃to151℃, NaAl(SiO3)2participated in the filter paper reaction, changed the way of the reaction, increased the generation of char, and reduced the yield of flammable products.(6) Through the DSC and SEM, the flame retardant mechanism were analyzed. When the flame retardant paper prepared by coating NaAl(SiO3)2compounded with hydroxide, flame retarding effect is good, delay the initial temperature of fiber decomposition. Including the flame retarding effect of hydroxide could release water vapor and it diluted the concentration of O2, the synergism with NaAl(SiO3)2could form a hard glass surface to keep the inside materials from burning, and the flame retarding effect was worked.
