Styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) is an important synthetic rubber at present,however SBR is a flammable rubber, so the application of SBR is severely limited.Intumescent flame retardants (IFR) have many advantages, such as higher flameretardant efficiency, low smoke and halogen-free. In this paper, a novel triazinecharring agent has been synthesized and studied in application of IFR in SBR.The sulfydryl triazine charring agent (SCA) has been synthesized by cyanuricchloride, sodium sulfide and ethlenediamine. The structure and thermal stability ofproduction was characterized by FT-IR, ELA and TG. A novel IFR system consistedof ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and synthetic product (SCA). The effect of massratio of APP/SCA and IFR content on SBR properties was investigated. The resultshowed SCA possessed effects of accelerating vulcanization and reinforcing. Afteronly SCA was added, it can shorten scorch of SBR, and enhanced mechanicalproperties of SBR. When IFR content is60phr, the mass ratio of APP/CFA is2/1,SBR has the best retardant property, LOI of SBR composites is29.5%and can passUL-94V0rating. Thermal degradation and combustion behavior were analyzed byTG and CONE. The results proved that SCA can use as air source and carbon source.SCA and APP constitute intumescent flame retardant (IFR), when IFR burned, theycan generate char layers which paly a role of insulation and oxygen barrier, so it hasgood combustion-preventing effects.Zeolite4A and ZB were used as synergistic agent and studied in the effect oftheir content on property of SBR composite. The experiment results demonstrated thatZeolite4A and ZB both possess synergistic effect in SBR-IFR system. the retardantproperty was the best when Zeolite4A content is6phr, because it can inducedehydrate reaction of APP/SCA and generate stuctrue of Si-P-Al-C with SBR, thisstructure can stabilize carbon layer. ZB has synergistic effect after add2phr to SBR.The main reason is that ZB can produce a liquid layer of viscous, this layer has effectthat diminishes flame. However, ZB is able to affect dehydrate reaction of APP/SCAdue to contain chemical structure water. Thermal degradation, combustion behavior and microstructure were analyzed by TG, CONE and SEM. The results proved Zeolite4A has better synergistic effect. Compare to SBR without Zeolite4A, its char residuerate increase, its pHRR, THR, pSPR and TSR value fell by24.6%,24.2%,0%, and37.6%, show it has good synergistic effect with APP/CFA. Images of SEM showcarbon layer of SBR with Zeolite4A is tight, so it has good retardant property.
