Day by day, the loads in power grid are becoming diversely as the development of power electronic devices, which causes the power grid faced with serious low power factor problem. When it comes to reactive power compensation, SVG (static var generator) turns into a hotspot by virtue of rapid response speed, smooth reactive power regulation, reliable operating characteristics, precise reactive power compensation and represents the development direction of reactive power compensation.Based on the study of reactive power compensation development history, this article explains the significance of reactive power compensation from the definition and use of it, at last the simulation and hardware system of SVG is designed. This paper highlights the principle of SVG and analyzes its advantages with respect to traditional devices. Two control modes of current direct control and current indirect control are compared and analyzed. With the software of MATLAB, using current direct control mode two models of SVG that controller in abc axes and in dq axes are built. By comparing and analyzing two models, an appropriate one is chosen as the guiding model to hardware realization. Physically, SVG in the low voltage are designed both in hardware and software. With respect to hardware, such circuits are set up as following: power supply circuit, current detection and adjustment circuit, voltage detection and adjustment circuit, IGBT drive circuit, relays drive circuit, protection circuit and three phase inverter etc. Besides, C language program suiting TMS320F2812of TI company is written to control SVG. In the end, SVG is debugged taking all the parts designed, through the analysis of debugging results, the rationality of the SVG designed is verified.
