Objective1. To assess the prevalence and severity of oral disease and get the basic data for oral health Promotion Plan.2. To explore major risk factors on children’s oral health and access the relationship between clinical dental status and associated risk factors among a samPle of children in Guangxi province, China.3. To survey the information including the children’s oral health status, dietary habits, oral health behavior, the oral health knowledge and attitudes towards oral health in order to provide scientific evidence for making oral policy.MethodsThe study were carried out in Guilin, Baise, Beihai city and Yongfu, Tianyang, Hepu county of Guangxi, China. A random sample of subjects 3903 aged 3-years old,6-years old,12-years old. Data were collected from a structure questionnaire and a clinical examination.Data entry has done by using Epidata (vision 3.1) and double-entry check. Data was analyzed by using SPSS 20.0. Descriptive results were conducted in order to identify the main patterns of data. This included information about sample distribution, demographic background, dental status, oral impact, self-perceived oral health, and self-perceived general health. Chi-Squared tests were used to explore the relationships between sociodemographic factors, diet, oral health knowledge, attitude, practice (OHKAP) and caries rates and quality of life. Multivariate logistic regression explored real relationship between sociodemographic factors, diet, oral health knowledge, attitude, practice (OHKAP) and caries rates and oral imPacts. Here alpha was set at 0.05.ResultsThe rate of dental caries in 3-years old children was 56.63%, while the index of dmft was 2.70, and the filling rate was 0.38%.The caries rate of the children aged 6-years old was 85.67%, while the index of dmft was 5.82,and the filling rate was 3.84%. The caries rate of the children aged 12-years old was 62.74%, while the index of dmft was 1.91, and the filling rate was 10.29%.1. Sociological factors:in 3-years old group, Gender, Ethic and Parents’ education were related to the caries rate, and there is no significant difference be found to the oral impacts. The caries experience in male was higher than that in female, the caries rate in Han nationality was lower compared to minority. The parents with bachelor degree or above have the lowest caries rate (P<0.05). In 6-years old group, the caries rate in urban was lower than in rural (P-0.033). The type of care and Parents’education were related to the oral impact.Gender, Ethic and Area were related to the caries rate and oral impact. A significant difference was found in this results (P<0.05).2. Dietary:Caries rate in 3 and 12-years old groups were found to be dependent on whether taking sweat food or drinks before sleeping, and the children who never taking sweat food or drinks before sleeping exhibited the lowest caries rate(P<0.05).Candy and choclalte were related to the oral impact of all group.3. Caries rate in 3-years old group were found to be dependent on whether taking feeding-bottle while sleeping. Children who always taking feeding-bottle while sleeping experienced the highest caries rate (P<0.001).Whether checking teethes in last 12 months was related to the caries rate, while a significant divergences were noted. Self-perceived oral health, and self-perceived general health were related to the caries rate in the children in 3, 6-years old groups. The higher core in self-perceived oral health, the lower caries rate. The knowledge about brushing teeth twice everyday was related to the caries rate in the children in 6,12-years old groups. The positive awareness was related to caries rate. Whether checking teethes in last 12 months was related to the oral impact of all groups, while a significant divergences were noted. In multivariate logistic model, taking feeding-bottle while sleeping and whether checking teeth in last 12 months were related to caries rate in 3-year old group in Han children. The registered residence and self-perceived oral health were related to caries rate in 6-years old group. Gender, ethnic, taking sweat food or drinks before sleeping and the evaluation of children’s oral health were related to caries rate of the 12-year old group. Whether checking teethes in last 12 months was related to the oral impact of all groups, while a significant divergences were noted.ConclusionsThe caries rates were higher than the average of China in the children in Guangxi, which is higher in rural than urban. The filling rate for caries was lower. Risk factor included sociodemographic factors, diet, oral health knowledge, attitude, practice (OHKAP). And the goverment, medical institution, education department, school and people should take action together to improve oral health in children.
