Object ivesTo explore the TCM syndromes characteristics of the vascular dementia patients in the lingnan area, and select patients of the typical syndromes to analyse the relationship between the differrent syndromes and cognitive impairment.MethodsThe study included103vascular dementia patients in the lingnan area, and the patients were measured with the Scale for the Differentiation of Syndromes of Vascular Dementia (SDSVD), Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Clock draw text(Clox), Hachinski ischemia scale (HIS), Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD) Alzheimer’s Disease Assessment Scale-Cognitive section(ADAS-Cog), Activity of Daily Living (ADL) and Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR). According to the scores of the MMSE between10-26points, HIS score>7points and HAMD score<7points,5patients were eliminated and98patients were included. The different of the SDSVD score among98patients was analysed. Then the typical syndromes were selectd and divided into different group. The scores of MMSE, cloxl, clox2, HIS, ADAS-Cog, CDR and ADL among those group were compared by Analysis of Variance.Result1. The main TCM syndromes of the vascular dementia patients in the lingnan area were deficiency of kidney essence (DKE),block of blood stasis in collaterals (BBSC) and obstruction of phlegm(OP), the frequency of three TCM syndromes were44.40%,25.92%and16.70%respectively. The combination of two or three syndromes were the most frequent combination patterns.A single syndrome appeared only1kind that it was deficiency of kidney essence. The combination of two syndromes appeared8kinds, and the main combination patterns were deficiency of kidney essence and block of blood stasis in collaterals, deficiency of kidney essence and obstruction of phlegm. The combination of three syndromes appeared6kinds, and the main combination pattern was deficiency of kidney essence and block of blood stasis in collaterals and deficiency of qi and blood. A majority of TCM syndromes of VD patients were deficiency-excess mixing.2. No significant difference(P>0.05) in the generally information was found among three groups(the group of Deficiency of Kidney Essence, Block of Blood Stasis in Collaterals and Obstruction of Phlegm). When comparisons were carried out among three groups, the scores of word memory of ADAS-Cog in DKE group were significantly lower than that of BBSC group and OP group. No significant variance (P>0.05) in other scales were found among three groups.ConclusionThe main TCM syndromes were deficiency of kidney essence, block of blood stasis in collaterals and obstruction of phlegm in the vascular dementia patients of the lingnan area. The combination of two or three syndromes were the most frequent combination patterns, and a majority of TCM syndromes of VD patients were deficiency-excess mixing. It was no relationship between different syndromes and cognitive impairment.
