Objective To evaluate efficacy and safety on ganglioside in the treatment of hypoxia ischemic encephalopathy. There is still controversy over its efficacy and safety. This meta-analysis were performed to assess the efficacy and survival benefit of ganglioside in the treatment of hypoxia ischemic encephalopathy.Methods The papers related to ganglioside in the treatment of hypoxia ischemic encephalopathy were electronically searched PubMed(1966-2010.12),EMBASE(1974-2010.12), Cochrane library(2010,isuuel1), Chinese Biomedical Database(1978-2010.12), Chinese Journal Full-text Database(1994-2010.12),Chinese Science and Technology Journal Full-text database(1989~2010.12), Digital Full-text Journals Database(1997-2010.12) and hand searched five Journals on Pediatrics by two independent screening and extract information. Randomized clinical trials (RCT) on the treatment of hypoxia ischemic encephalopathy with ganglioside were included and assessed for quality by two investigators using method, which is recommend by handbook of Cochrane Collaboration. A Mata analysis was performed by RevMan5.0.Result There are11studies and a total of849children. Meta analysis’s results show that compared with conventional treatment group, ganglioside group have statistically significant in neural system sequela [RR=0.35,95%CI(015,0.82)], the incidence of abnormal CT head [RR=0.56,95%CI(0.39,0.78,)],7days[RR=3.01,95%CI(2.22,3.81)],10-14days[RR=2.51,95%CI(2.19,2.83)],28days [RR=2.81,95%CI(2.26,3.36)] of neurobehavioral scores. In fatality ratio aspect [RR=0.59,95%CI(0.14,2.39)], there is not statistically significant.Conclusions The present study showed that ganglioside has certain therapeutic values in treating hypoxia ischemic encephalopathy. Conventional treatment combined with ganglioside in the treatment of HIE can improve the total effective rate, reduce the neurological sequela, improve neurobehavioral scores, and reduce the incidence of abnormal head CT. Further high-quality, long follow-up period RCTS should be carried out to provide more reliable evidence.
