Objective: we present a retrospective study of61cases of the GATA sub-type IIIspinal tuberculosis were treated with surgery in recent years, and to explore the choice ofsurgical procedure of the GATA sub-type III patients with spinal tuberculosis. Methods:From March2007to December2010, there were95cases of the GATA sub-type III spinalTB were admitted in our hospital,61cases were followed, including25males and36females, aged from5to71years old, averaged36.4±18.5, involving one vertebral bodyin one case,22cases of two vertebrae, involving three vertebral body or more in38cases,Cobb angle of kyphosis was22~125°, an average of47.1±19.8°Pre-surgery frankel Ain0cases, frankel B in5cases, frankel C in10cases, frankel D in29cases, frankel E in17cases. According to different surgical procedure, we take the cases into3groups.34cases(group A) were treated with anterior debridement and interbody fusion and internalfixation;17cases(group B) were treated with posterior debridement and fusion(orthopedic) and internal fixation,10cases(group C)were treated with anteriordebridement and bone fusion, posterior internal fixation (orthopedic). Results:61patientswere followed up for12to36months, an average of25.5±8.1months. The average Cobbangle correction was25.3±17.7°,a mild loss from1~5°,anaverage of2.9±2.6°duringthe followed-up period;44patients had neurological deficits preoperative, aim proved from0to2points after operation; operative time was120min~300min, for an average of184.0min±47.0min;350~1300ml of the amount of bleeding, an average of657.0±217.0ml. Complication rate was19.7%,in group A, the bone fusion rate was93.4%, andfusion time was from6to12months, an average of7.3±1.3months; clinical cure ratewas82.0%, the recurrence rate was4%, excellent rate was83.6%. Conclusion: Thepatients of GATA sub-type III spinal tuberculosis treated with internal fixation have aneffective rusult, but the specific choice of surgical approach should be based on the lesions, abscesses, the angle of kyphosis and the range of the bone graft after radicaldebridement, through these toselect different surgical methods.
