Beethoven is a famous German composer, one of the representatives Vienna Classical Music in Europe. In his life he created a lot of music works. It reflects his unique talent and artistic charm. Especially in his later music, he has created the music miracle. His work displayed big-sound, grand-scale features, which mainly reflected in the creation of his symphony. Especially in Fugue, the concentrated expression is the application of the Fugue. We all know that Beethoven’s writing style is mainly homophony, but polyphonic minds still exists. In music works enchase fabric of polyphonic forms, it is universal phenomenon that homophony decorates to polyphony. It is one of the technical approaches Beethoven usually uses. Especially the "Fugue" ---polyphonic form, is the common phenomenon in his later work.This paper is divided into four chapters. The first chapter, introduction introduces the topic of the theory and practical significance, the domestic and foreign literature review, related field study situation and so on. The second chapter introduces Beethoven and his late works. It is mainly from Beethoven’s life, music creation in three important periods and the creation of Beethoven polyphonic music to discuss. The third chapter details fugue in his late works, which mainly reflects in late piano sonatas, string quartets, symphony and solemn works. The fourth chapter deeply discusses the main characteristics of fugue application in his late works. It includes characteristic, polyphonic techniques, texture form and melody structure.This article will fully analyze on Fugue theory’s application, the performance of musical practices and polyphonic technologies in his later work. To conclude and summarize Fugue’characteristics, to explore its construction to the theoretical and practical methods in polyphony subjects. To make more music scholars can understand the form of polyphony, and actively participate in this study.
