Literature reflects real life. Literal works are, generally speaking, compositive depictions on scenes, states, thoughts, notions, etc. out of real life. Even though they cannot reflect real life as it be, they present some important parts of social life to some degree.There are plentiful literal works on the theme of love in the sea of ancient Chinese literature and there should be many real cases in ancient China, especially in the late Ming Dynasty and the early Qing Dynasty when people began to appeal for freedom on marriage and love with the development of the thoughts of freedom. There should be incompatible contradictions and conflicts between people’s flourishing dream of love and straitlaced social doctrines that restrict and restrain this dream. Combing the context of age and society, using the novels of the Ming and Qing dynasties as objects of analysis, this article aims at exploring the causes of this conflict pattern, as well as the profound cultural connotations it reflects.This article contains four parts. For introduction, it will introduce the Confucian culture in the sense relationship systematically,then discusses the Confucian concept of marriage,which directly influences the later marriage theme expression and the authors of free love and marriage attitude.In chapter one, it will trace down the origins of ancient stories about love before the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and analyze the differences and similarities between The Romance of West Chamberon the settings of binary opposition in love and doctrine conflicts. In chapter two, it will focus on analyzing love and doctrine conflicts in the novels in the Ming and Qing Dynasties like The Adventures of Hsi Men Ching and A Dream in Red Mansions. In chapter three, combining with historical background it will present further analysis and induction out of the materials from the aspects of writers’motivation, readers’ acceptance, and social function, etc. and present ultimate recognition and understanding for love and doctrine conflicts.In general, it is a kind of eternal and ineluctable conflict between love and doctrine in real social life. Studying its roots, pattern, and social effects will help people handle it well and develop positive views on love, as well as promote individuals’internal unification and harm ony.
