The instruction of English writing has always been the weak point of Englishteaching, which leads to the poor quality of college students’ English writing.Wrong-spelled words, orderless sentence structure, colloquial style and Chinglish areoften found in college students’ English compositions. The condition can’t beimproved effectively in traditional English writing class in which all students aretaught with the same teaching method. If college students can employ some trainingstrategies under autonomous learning, the quality of their English composition can beimproved largely.Writing Training Strategy in autonomous English learning, based on Taylor’sCurriculum Principles, consists of a series of steps, such as goal setting, materialsadoption, teaching and testing. At the same time the “chunk strategy” under whichEnglish are input and output in chunks can reduce the process of acquisition of mentallexicon and syntax analysis, which will greatly improve the efficiency and quality ofEnglish learning. The four-month experiment consisting of118second-year collegeEnglish majors also confirms the validity of this writing training strategy. This studycan help college students to improve the level of their English writing and also hassome enlightenment on autonomous learning and English writing teaching.
