Pragmatic inference refers to what the listener infers in the process ofcommunications while fully taking the context into account. The model put forward bySperber and Wilson is much simple, brief and persuasive, but still has its limitations. Thus, pragmatic inference should be relevance-based, cooperative maxims-combined to inferutterance meaning. Relevance-based pragmatic inferential approach was applied topostgraduate translation teaching just to verify its applicability to translation teaching. Two different teaching methods were employed in experiment and control classesrepectively. Experimental instruments are tests and questionaires before and after theexperiment. Experimental, questionaire and data-analysis methods are adopted in thepaper. Experimental method includes relevance-based pragmatic inferential approach andtraditional one. Questionaire method is intended to make clear students’ attidude towardsand interest in translation teaching and their grasp of translation process. And finally thedata from the tests and questionaires are analysed via SPSS.The result indicates that translation teaching based on pragmatic inferential approachmakes students more interseted in translation teaching and the teaching effects greatlyimproved. Students are highly motivated and tanslation teaching and study can be carriedout smoothly under the new teaching model. Teaching-process emphasized pragmaticinference model improves teaching to such an extent that it is of highly applicability totranslation teaching. This paper significantly provides theoretical reference and practicalexperience for postgraduate English courses as well as a new perspective for translationstudies.
