Study On Plotinus’s Virtue Views

In our world today, the important of moral belief and inherent virtue are notvalued any more. The moral life has been changed in several aspects. However, what isthe definition of virtue on earth? What revealed us from the function and intrinsicvalue of virtue? How to get theoretically from the causes of these problems, thinkingabout the way of solving these problems and countermeasures, It is undoubtedlyimportant meaning of things. Therefore, the virtue of the problem is more urgent andpertinence, its significance and value also is more prominent.From the point of Marxist, this paper, adapting the dialectical and historicalmaterialist point of view and methodology, aims to discuss the background, theoreticorigin, philosophical basis, basic content, historical influence and modernenlightenment. Meanwhile, it aims to elaborate the inherence relations between virtueand spirit, and make a brief analysis of the ways to spread virtue. The object of thestudy is trying to explain the value of Plotinus’s thoughts in contemporary ethics andsocial practice. The results of the research on Plotinus’s views will also standardizeand instruct the formation of individual virtue, at the same time, it stimulates moreattention on the formation of modern virtue.The first step to understand Plotinus’s thoughts clearly must be knowing itsbackground and theoretic origin. In ancient Greece, economic depression, politicalunrest and the culture hybrid between Hebrew and Greek provide historical conditionsto form the virtues. Plotinus’s thoughts on virtue origins from the virtue thinkingsof Plato, Aristotle and Stoicism. Plotinus’s thoughts are based on theory of knowledgeand ontology, the essence of his thoughts is purified humans’ spirit to be with God.Meanwhile, it can be divided into civil virtue and purified virtue on the basis of socialstratum. Plotinus’s thoughts on virtue play an important role in ethics. Therefore, acomprehensive construction of virtue can be composed by virtue’s relations withkindness, spirit and beauty. Plotinus’s thoughts about virtue, however, limited by theconditions of that time, his thoughts will inevitably have defects. Therefore, Plotinus’s thoughts on virtue can be used for reference in a lot ofrespects,virtues of Plotinus concept helps us to explore the universality of virtueethics and common problems. It provides a reference to seek for the Chinese culturalvalues of the universality and virtue ethics.Especially from the dialectic view of waysof virtue, it is suitable for the current virtue,whether it is worthwhile to pursue. Thepurpose is our ideological and political education of regularity. At the same time, It hascertain reference significance to construction our contemporary virtue or values.
