Taking into consideration the importance of spoken Chinese courses and current status of teaching of spoken Chinese to foreigners, this paper provides some suggestions and insights for reforms in teaching methodology.Speaking is consistently viewed as one of the most important aspects of language proficiency. In spoken Chinese courses designed for foreign students, the need for the students to speak up is emphasized. But how to turn the words and phrases students have mastered into the ability to communicate in real-world scenarios and what teaching methodology to adopt to achieve those goals are important issues for many teachers. The author of this paper proposes using task-oriented teaching to enhance students’ competence in verbal communication. Through classroom monitoring, the author finds that pre-designed coursework can meet students practicing demand and prompts them to participate in classroom exchanges. In the literature review section, this paper introduces the patterns and features of task-oriented teaching, and analyses the goals and layout of spoken classes. On top of that, this paper tried to point out some structural problems in spoken Chinese courses for foreigners and puts forth some possible improvement measures and overarching objectives. This paper is tailored for the needs of Korean students. In monitoring and analyzing their courses, the author identifies some of their common mistakes so that their spoken Chinese can be improved. The author of this paper has also designed some sample coursework models with the aim to improve speaking course. In conclusion, task-oriented teaching is an efficient teaching method.Though students should take charge in classrooms, teachers should fulfill their responsibility by designing coursework and doing preparations carefully. This requires the teachers to not only fully grasp a new teaching methodology, but also prepare coursework and tasks for foreigner-oriented speaking courses carefully, so that students can learn more from spoken Chinese courses.
