The Philosophical Pursuit In The American Sci-fi Movies Of The Recent Decade

American science fiction(sci-fi) movies play a very important role in the world movie arena because they serve not only as a shining monument in Hollywood history, but also as an extension to the global movies. This thesis studies the American sci-fi movies of the recent decade, with the aim to explore the underlying philosophical pursuit in these movies which later can provide experience and guidance for the future development of China’s sci-fi movies. It is hoped that this study can contribute to the development of the cinema aesthetics and promote the diversification and internationalization of China’s movie industry. This thesis illustrates the history and development of American science fictions and sci-fi movies, and makes an analysis and summary of the present studies on these two in China. It is concluded that the American sci-fi movies of the recent decade have freed themselves from the restrictions of time, space and life forms. They have demonstrated unique aesthetic characteristics, deep cultural significance, and a perpetual pursuit of the essence and value of life.This thesis includes four parts. Part 1 makes a general summary of the history and development of science fictions and sci-fi movies, and summarizes the recent and present studies of sci-fi movie aesthetics in China. It is thought that comparing to the study on China’s science fictions, the underdevelopment of the study on sci-fi movie aesthetics in China is mainly due to the lack of presence of sci-fi movies, which is the significance and purpose lie in. Part 2 mainly explores the spirit to break restrictions in the American sci-fi movies. It analyzes the movies and seeks the philosophical ideas and values in the sci-fi movies. Part 3 discusses the aesthetic revolution brought by the rapid development of digital technology and multi-culture, and analyzes their expansive influence on the manifestation and aesthetics of sci-fi movies. Part 4 first elaborates on the reason for the public’s passion for sci-fi movies from a psychological and esthetic perspective. It then explores in a post-modern context the underlying philosophical need in sci-fi movies.
